Bookclub and Tapas at Salsa Cafe- restaurant review

So, we set up a bookclub to my Mum’s entertainment (she thought they were just for middle aged people!). In reality it wasn’t to appreciate great literature or spark deep debates, more just an excuse to meet up, drink wine and eat good food. It is now also an excuse to meet new people.

Book/dinner club picks a book each month and a complementary restaurant in Newcastle for a meet up. If you are reading this you really should be thinking about joining!

For our very first book we read The Return by Victoria Hislop. My quick synopsis (I won’t give any spoilers seeing as I was the only one of the 8 to finish the book!) It is very long, really quite depressing at points, slightly on the predictable side and fails to mention tapas anywhere in it! The latter shouldn’t be a problem with a book it’s just that I wanted there to be a good lead in to the restaurant review..

Restaurant Review of Salsa Cafe

Salsa Cafe is on Westgate Road in Newcastle just a stones throw away from Central Station. It has a very laid back feel to it and is open as a bar to grab a quick post work drink, a cafe for a light bite or a full restaurant. We were made to feel really welcome on arrival and shown to a sofa area which had been reserved for us. A great chance to meet everyone properly.

We moved over to our table as starters arrived (we had pre-ordered a £12 per head special set menu which was unbelievably good value). Starters consisted of a heap of Nachos with sour cream, guacomole and refried beans (a personal highlight) and a mountain of really crispy wedges with various dips. We washed down our starters with a very big and refreshing glass of sangria.

Tapas at Salsa Cafe Newcastle

For main course we had a selection of authentic Spanish tapas including some personal favourites; AlbÓndigas, Chorizo a la Sidra, Aceituna Aliñadas and Patatas Bravas. You can see the full menu here. The tapas dishes were excellent and full of flavour and it was great to have so much variety, the only room for improvement would of been a touch more garlic in the Ali Oli and garlic mushrooms, but I am a garlic fiend after all!

All in all we had a fantastic experience at Salsa Cafe- top class service, delicious tapas and a relaxed setting to enjoy meeting new people.
